Aquino Declares National Day of Mourning for Slain Elite Cops
MANILA, Philippines–President Benigno Aquino III on Wednesday declared a National Day of Mourning for the 44 elite cops killed in an encounter in Mamasapano town, Maguindanao province, last Sunday.
The policemen were part of the 392 members of the Special Action Force (SAF) tasked to arrest Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir (also known as Marwan) and Filipino bombmaking expert Basit Usman who are both connected with Jemaah Islamiyah.
“Bilang paggalang sa mga ng mga nasawi, magdedeklara tayo ng isang National Day of Mourning bilang sagisag ng pagdadalamhati at pakikiramay ng ating buong bansa (As a sign of respect to those who died, we will declare a National Day of Mourning as a symbol of our nation’s grief and sympathy),” Aquino said in a speech before media and his Cabinet members in Malacanang.
He said the National Day of Mourning will be on Friday, January 30.
The encounter allegedly happened near the base of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), which has been in peace negotiations with the Philippine government.
The MILF denied that it coordinated with the breakaway group Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters during the “misencounter.” Aquino also said they are still waiting for the report of the board on inquiry. He said the government has yet to establish that the MILF was indeed responsible for the deaths of the policemen.
After the President’s 16-minute speech, Malacañang released Proclamation no. 953, which asks all public institutions and installations to lower the Philippine flag to half mast on Friday.
“These deaths are a great loss to our people and during this time of grief, a most solemn commemoration and respect is called for,” it said.
Communications Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said there was no announcement if work or classes will be suspended.

As a result, God teaches love for our neighbor (Matthew 19:19) as well as love for those in need (Luke 10:25-37). Jesus was the one who taught theGolden Rule: “So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets” (Matthew 7:12). Further,Proverbs 31:8-9teaches us to “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy.” These principles certainly all apply to those hurt through the illegal practice of human trafficking.
How can people today practice these biblical principles of helping those in the bondage of slavery? First, we must pray for those in bondage. AsJames 5:16notes, “The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.” Human trafficking is a clear need that requires God’s power for any adequate change to occur.
Second, we must speak out on behalf of those in need (Proverbs 31:8-9). Those in our schools, businesses, churches, and community often are unaware of the problem of human trafficking and how to help. Perhaps God is calling you to be one of the people who would speak out and help provide justice to those without a voice in this area.
Third, we must act to help those in bondage. These actions can involve a variety of means, ranging from volunteering in an anti-trafficking organization to financial giving to teaching about the topic where you live. A growing number of organizations have emerged in recent years that provide new opportunities for Christians to serve in this area. International Justice Mission (www.ijm.org) provides many international opportunities, while others, such at Mercy Movement (www.mercymovement.com) concentrate on addressing the issue in the United States.
One additional way to provide practical assistance is through supporting fair trade and survivor-made products. Fair trade products include items sold by those who adhere to practices that remove any unfair labor practices, especially slavery. Coffee, teas, chocolate, and fresh flowers are common products that offer fair trade alternatives to help keep slavery out of the supply chain.

High Court Upholds Conviction for Human Trafficking
MANILA, Philippines—For the second time in three years, the Supreme Court demonstrated its firm stance against human trafficking in a ruling that upheld the conviction of a woman caught trafficking two victims, including a minor.
In a 21-page ruling released on Friday, the high court’s Second Division affirmed the conviction of Shirley Casio, who was caught offering the services of two women for P500 each to undercover police officers in an entrapment operation in Cebu City.
In a statement on the ruling, Associate Justice Marvic Leonen called on stakeholders to unite and “contribute to a commitment to finally stamp out slavery and human trafficking.”
He added: “We should continue to strive for the best of our world, where our choices of human intimacies are real choices, and not the last resort taken just to survive.”
The statement said it was the second time the Supreme Court “took a strong stance on the trafficking of persons” through a full-blown decision since the anti-trafficking in persons law was passed in 2003.
In 2011, Associate Justice Antonio Carpio upheld the conviction of two illegal recruiters who sent four women, including a minor, to work as prostitutes in Malaysia.
The Leonen ruling, which was handed down in December, upheld the Court of Appeals’ affirmation of the Cebu Regional Trial Court’s conviction of Casio, who was charged with recruiting two females, including a 17-year-old, “for the purpose of prostitution and sexual exploitation, by acting as their procurer for different customers.”
Casio was arrested in an entrapment operation set up on the initiative of the International Justice Mission, an organization that “rescues victims of violence, sexual exploitation, slavery and oppression.”Tarra Quismundo

Present-day college freshman and devout Christian, Josh Wheaton (Shane Harper), finds his faith challenged on his first day of Philosophy class by the dogmatic and argumentative Professor Radisson (Kevin Sorbo). ‘Mercy and Compassion’ by Pope Francis
About the Theme of the Apostolic Visit:
The Apostolic Visit of Pope Francis to the Philippines from January 15 – 19, 2015 will have for its theme “Mercy and Compassion”.
Pope Francis will visit the Philippines primarily to comfort Filipinos devastated by the typhoon and the earthquake that hit the Visayas.
This visit calls to mind what Jesus did as recounted in the Gospel. In Matthew 9:36, Jesus after “seeing the people, felt compassion for them, because they were distressed and dispirited like sheep without a shepherd.”
And like the Good Shepherd of Whom he is the Vicar here on earth, the Holy Father saw the suffering of his flock. He felt compassion and comes to us bringing “the joy of the gospel” to revive our “drooping spirit” and to lead us to greener pastures (cf. Psalm 23).
The message the Holy Father brings with him challenges us to imitate Christ, the Good Shepherd, who is Mercy and Compassion.
In his Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium, Pope Francis proclaims that “the Church must be a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel” (Evangelii Gaudium 114). Thus, the Holy Father’s visit is to bring Christ’s compassion for our suffering people still struggling to rise from the devastations wrought by the earthquake and the typhoon that hit the Visayas last year.
Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines president and Lingayen Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, said the most distinctive way to prepare spiritually for the coming of Pope Francis is for the country to become “a people rich in mercy.”
“Our compassionate shepherd comes to show his deep concern for our people who have gone through devastating calamities, especially in the Visayas. He comes to confirm us in our faith as we face the challenges of witnessing the Joy of the Gospel in the midst of our trials. This is an eloquent way of showing mercy and compassion,” Archbishop Villegas said.
Filipinos as a preparation for the papal visit resolve to make an act of mercy everyday, such as giving food to the hungry, helping build homes for the disaster victims, visiting prisoners or patients in the charity ward of hospitals, drug rehabilitation centers, homes for the elderly, and orphanages. It is a time to re-learn and live the Spiritual and Corporal Acts of Mercy. Further, the bishops encourage us to meet Christ, Mercy Himself, in the Tribunal of Mercy, the Sacrament of Reconciliation. There, in the person of the priest, He awaits us with open arms to show us His mercy, compassion and love.
“Let us make mercy our national identity. Trust in God’s mercy is part and parcel of our traditional Filipino Christian culture. Let us make the practice of mercy our gift to the pope when he comes to visit us,” the CBCP president said at that time.

- Anyone can set up an account in seconds; no tech knowledge is needed (though there are aspects of Facebook that are rather quirky and hard to use).

- Live our lives openly and transparently in front of our friends as we do in the physical world, demonstrating unconditional love and the fragrance spoken of in 2 Cor. 2:15.

- Churches should consider the potential for creating a Fan Page: read more. A church Fan Page, like a normal church site, should be outsider-friendly (1 Col. 4:5) and jargon-free. Here are some useful examples.
- Many church youth groups conduct all their discussion and news distribution through a Facebook Group, because it’s so easy where 100% of young people have Facebook accounts.
- Under religious views on their Facebook profile, many people enter something like ‘Jesus follower’ or ‘seeker after truth’ rather than the increasingly pejorative ‘Christian’ or some denominational label.
- Don’t treat people as ‘gospel fodder’. Build unconditional relationships with respect and tolerance. Use integrity. It’s dialogue, not preaching. “The focus should be on building authentic relationships. Without it, not only do you run the risk of not being effective, but also in ruining any chance that other Christians might have,” says Dan King of Bibledude.com. “That’s why the most important thing that you can understand about social media is that it’s social in nature.”
- People will quickly see through insincerity and mixed motives. Cat owners know well the conditional affection shown by their pets when they want feeding: cupboard love. Facebook users will be less tolerant. They will quickly discern that you view them as ‘a project’ rather than a person.
- Some stategists have named inappropriate, strident, argumentative, manipulative or impersonal attempts to convince people of the truth with the chilling term un-evangelism.
- Avoid Chistrianese jargon. Express truths in alternate neutral language.
- Dont’t spend too much time on Facebook, or not use that time effectively. Read Top 9 Facebook Time Wasters to Avoid.
- Facebook is not always very intuitive to use or edit. It takes time to understand even the privacy settings and their implications. Realise that what you see on your Facebook page is not what visitors see: try viewing your page using a Facebook friend’s profile, and through the profile of someone who is not your friend, to see the differences.
- You can also learn how to use the Facebook Markup Language (FBML) to integrate other features into your Facebook Fan Page.
- There are daily limits on the number of people you can invite to be friends, and a very low limit on the number of messages you can send to non-friends. Such ‘cold-calling’ should be done with particular sensitivity.
- Use Google to find advice on all these areas – Facebook’s own documentation is often patchy. Some things you may find out by trial and error, for instance: you can only invite limited numbers of friends to a Fan Page at a time or the procedure fails, and that if their picture ceases to be ‘grayed out’ after you have done this, it means they have rejected (rather than ignored) the request, so do not send it again as it looks like you are spamming them.

What is Human Trafficking?
Human Trafficking refers to the recruitment, obtaining, hiring, providing, transportation, maintaining, harboring or receipt of persons for the purpose of exploitation within or outside the country, with or without the victim's consent or knowledge.
The purpose of exploitation includes, at a minimum, the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labor or services, slavery, servitude or the removal or sale of organs.
Human trafficking is committed by means of threat, Use of force or other forms of coercion, abduction, fraud, deception, abuse of power or position, or by taking advantage of the vulnerability of the person, or by giving or receiving payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person.
If the victim is a child, the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, adaption, or receipt of the victim for the purpose of exploitation hall be considered human trafficking even if it does not involve any of these means. Human trafficking is also committed even without these means if the adoption of the child is induced by any form of consideration for exploitative purposes.
